We use it to listen for knock, this way we really know where the edge of knock is. We can hear the fussy edge where it just barely tickles the sensor, from there we back it down to keep it safe.
When we install them in cars, we set them up to retard timing automatically and this allows you to run the raggedy edge safely. We always tune with the retard feature turned off, this lets us know where the set ups knock window is.
